Safe Routes to School Updates
Next Bike/Walk to School Events

Wednesday, March 13 - Ormondale School
Friday, March 15 - Corte Madera School
Rewards and treats for all participants!

Before the next Bike/Walk Days in March, try the following to help reduce traffic close to our schools:
*bike to and from school at least ONCE PER WEEK
*walk with a group to school just like many did on International Bike/Walk Day
*choose to bike or walk from a location a bit further away from school (ie. Town Center, Roberts), if you cannot bike or walk from home

It's still great fun to bike and walk all year round. Just remember to bundle up with mittens and warm clothes for those colder mornings. See you out on the trails!

International Bike/Walk to School Report
Ormondale School - 195 participants
Corte Madera School - 248 participants

Terrific job to the students - over 65% of our entire student body participated!

Saturday, April 20 Portola Valley Bike Rodeo
Portola Valley Bike Rodeo @ Town Center in conjunction with Earth Day
Led by Safe Moves and members of PV Bicycle, Pedestrian, Traffic Safety Committee

BPTS (Bicycle, Pedestrian, Traffic Safety) Committee works with Priory to get morning crossing guard at Priory entrance!
BPTS also pursues new trail along Corte Madera Road, future improvements along Alpine Road Trail, and crossing guard at Golden Hills/Alpine Club crosswalk. Stay tuned!

Safety Tip:

Safety Tip of the Month
STUDENTS:
*Always use the crosswalk - DO NOT JAYWALK!
*Watch out for cars approaching from both directions. Look left, right, then left again before proceeding
*Our trails are SAFE ROUTES to School - use the trails! If biking in the roadway, please bike with traffic on the same side of the street.
*Please be extra careful in the Triangle Park parking lots, and use extra caution when crossing at the hardware store - watch for cars!

DRIVERS:
*SLOW DOWN at all times on Alpine and Portola Roads, on Shawnee Pass and Georgia Lane, and at all crosswalks
*Sheriffs have begun monitoring the schools again. Please do not use your cell phones when driving - it is against the law. And drive safely and responsibly.
*We ask everyone to NOT use Corte Madera, Canyon, and Echo as throughways to school.
These are SAFE ROUTES to School and should be left free of cars so that pedestrians and bikes can arrive at school safely.
*Please use alternate routes to school: we recommend Alpine Road in both directions, using Portola Road and Willowbrook as arterials for arriving at school.
*DO NOT U-Turn in Alpine Road between 7:30-8:00 am, or 3:00-3:30 pm. It is extremely unsafe for children arriving to school.
*Sheriffs are monitoring and watching for safe driving practices at our back gate drop off/pick up area especially and throughout the neighboring streets.

* Watch for excess speed on Shawnee Pass. We have a dangerous corner with low visibility, especially with parked cars on one side, as you approach the school. Many young children and bikes are out on this SAFE ROUTE to School and we must yield to them and lower our speeds accordingly.
*The end of Georgia Lane by the Priory field and the Grove Gate is NOT a drop off area. This is a SAFE ROUTE to School and must remain clear at all times for bikers and pedestrians.
